ABS resin is a yellowish solid with a certain degree of toughness and a density of approximately 1.04–1.06 g/cm³. It exhibits strong resistance to corrosion by acids, alkalis, and salts, and offers a degree of resistance to dissolution by organic solvents.
ABS resin performs well in environments ranging from -25°C to 60°C and possesses excellent moldability; finished products feature smooth surfaces and are easily dyed or electroplated. Consequently, it is widely used for everyday items such as home appliance housings and toys-familiar LEGO bricks, for instance, are made of ABS.
ABS resin can be compounded with various other resins-such as PC, PVC, PA, and PBT-to create blends (e.g., PC/ABS, ABS/PVC, PA/ABS, PBT/ABS) that offer new properties and open up new application areas; for example, blending ABS with PMMA yields transparent ABS resin.
